Lean
manufacturing has been used both conceptually and in practice to identify and
eliminate waste in manufacturing operations for years. Can Lean
Manufacturing principles and practices be applied to business processes? Of
course! However, using lean manufacturing training materials designed for
manufacturing applications laced with manufacturing terminology
and examples from manufacturing operations to teach people who
work in an office setting runs counter to the spirit of lean.
Lean is about reducing waste, not requiring people to struggle
with lean manufacturing jargon as they work to “translate” the
content to the world of transactional business processes.
Lean for Business Processes
training
is a computer-based training course designed specifically for
those working in business processes and transactional
environments. The course begins with explanations and examples
of the Seven Wastes in “office-friendly” terms. Process mapping
techniques are coupled with process streamlining methods to
demonstrate how value streams can be configured to be more
effective. The course adds 5S, error-proofing and TPM techniques
to the Lean Business Process arsenal and wraps up with
descriptions of measures that can be used to sustain and expand
the Lean initiative.
Once your Lean for Business Processes
effort is underway, you may need to jump start your lean effort
in manufacturing operations. Check out our companion course on
lean for manufacturing, Lean
Manufacturing, to provide your manufacturing
personnel with the know how to apply lean tools and techniques
to their operations.
Be sure to check out our
Lean Manufacturing Resource Center. It is full of helpful information
about Lean Manufacturing as well as useful forms and checklists.
